The Saddle Club Camp is located in northeastern Oregon high in the mountains of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest just 12 miles from Halfway, Oregon on the edge of the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. Saddle Club Camp offers a great setting for beginning riders to improve their skills and gain confidence. But be sure to bring a camera and plenty of film. In northeastern Oregon, deer and elk sightings are common.
The camp lasts six fun-filled days from Monday through Saturday. On arrival, campers sign in and get settled into one of our tents that will be home for four to eight campers. We try to make room for everyone who wants a real western adventure.
After all the first-day introductions, each camper, with the help of the wrangler, will choose the horse she wishes to ride for the week. Each day campers receive riding lessons in the morning and, after lunch, head out onto a nearby mountain trail to practice their skills.
But riding is only part of the fun. Campers learn how to properly brush, comb, curry, saddle, and unsaddle their horses. Each camper is also responsible for the daily care and feeding of her horses. They will also receive instruction in basic equitation. Lessons will happen each morning followed after lunch by a ride on nearby mountain trails.
Here's the best part. On the fourth day of camp, all the gear is loaded onto mules, and then everyone rides deep into the forest to eat s'mores around the campfire and spend the night under a big western sky filled with a billion stars. There's only one word for it. Wow!
We suggest that all campers bring a warm sleeping bag and personal gear for a week. A suggested packing list will be mailed to all campers in advance. Everything else the campers need will be provided by Saddle Club Camp. $625USD per camper.
